Community Service
Each youth released on parole at the Akron Region must complete at least 20 hours of community service before being discharged from parole. This approach has been very successful. Community agencies are pleased with the work completed by our youth, and we received very favorable comments from agency staff. Many different agencies participate in the Akron Region’s community service program, each possessing their own specific needs.
Some of the agencies that they have worked with during the past year include:
- Goodwill Inc.
- Salvation Army
- NAACP
- The Food Bank
- True North Ministries
- March of Dimes
- The Red Cross
Collaboration and Cooperation Efforts
The Akron Region has worked closely with county, community and city organizations to enhance communication between the Juvenile Parole Officers and the local law enforcement. Most recently the Akron Regional Office collaborated with the Akron Police Department and Summit County Sheriff’s Department to develop a Parole evening accountability check and warrant execution program.
State initiatives and programs that have been implemented and utilized to assist youth with housing, employment, educational, and personal needs in the last year have included:
- JOBS Program through the Summit/Stark County Courts
- Family Resource Program at the Summit County Courts
- Family Advocacy Program through the Regional UMADAOP’s
- Next Step through JOG Workforce Advocacy
- Access to Recovery through Community Health Center.
- Disproportionate Minority Contact program in Mahoning, Richland, Stark, Summit, and Trumbull Counties
- Re-entry court programs in Mahoning, Richland, Stark, and Summit counties
- Development of step down program with local community providers for youth sex-offenders
Success Stories
It is a proud moment when we can celebrate the successful reentry of youth back into their communities as productive citizens. The Akron Region is proud to have many success stories of discharged youth pursuing productive lives through enrollment in community colleges, successful completion of community counseling programs, and receiving honors and invitations to spend time with local city officials.
