Mohican Juvenile Correctional Facility

Mohican Juvenile Correctional Facility (MoJCF) is located on 16 acres of land in the Mohican State Forest, halfway between Columbus and Cleveland. MoJCF is a one-of-a-kind juvenile correctional facility for males with serious substance abuse issues, providing a six-month Therapeutic Community (TC) Program.

The mission of MoJCF is to provide holistic substance abuse treatment services to juvenile offenders in a safe and secure, therapeutic community that promotes right living principles for a drug and crime free existence.

Youth reside in dormitory style living accommodations consisting of four family units with forty-two (42) beds in each.

MoJCF is a fully accredited juvenile correctional facility, and was one of the first facilities to be accredited by the American Correctional Association.

Theraputic Community

The program consists of orientation and three phases.  Phase one and two are considered core treatment and phase three focuses on relapse prevention.  Each phase has its own set of expectations and privileges.  In a Therapeutic Community, everything must be earned. Movement to another phase depends on the achievement of treatment goals. Points are earned on a daily basis and serve as the factor for privileges that increase with phase movement.

Admission
Youth enter MoJCF through the referral of other DYS institutions or the youth’s committing county.   Referrals come from the DYS Release Authority, other institutions, judges, and parole officers.  Youth meeting the admission criteria will be considered for the Therapeutic Community Program, regardless of offense level or county of commitment. Youth spend the last six months of their commitment exposed to the philosophies of a Therapeutic Community.
Admission Criteria
  • The youth must be male and between the ages of 13-21 years old.
  • The youth must have a documented alcohol or other drug problem.
  • The youth's Juvenile Automated Substance Abuse Evaluation (JASAE) score must be 21 or over which indicates that residential substance abuse treatment is recommended.
